Ed had been an active Rotarian since joining the Waseca Rotary Club in January 1964. He joined "by choice not by chance" because he believes in the concept of "Service Above Self". He has been fortunate to be able to maintain perfect attendance since joining Rotary. He served as President of the local club in 1966-67, Area Representative for District, District Attendance Chair, District Governor in 1982-83, elected to represent District 5960 at the Rotary Council on Legislation in 1986, District Advisory Committee member, District Awards and Recognition Chair 2001-2002, served as speaker at many Rotary Clubs, District Conferences and Assemblies.

Ed Frederick is a Senior Fellow, University of Minnesota with special responsibilities for rural development partnerships. He serves as facilitator for the Minnesota Agriculture Project, the Minnesota Dairy Leaders Roundtable and the University of Minnesota Rural Development Council.

He was founding Chancellor at the University of Minnesota, Waseca (1969-1990). Prior to becoming Chancellor, he was Superintendent of the Southern School of Agriculture and Experiment Station in Waseca (1964-69). He has served as an Animal Scientist and Instructor at the Northwest School and Experiment Station in Crookston from 1958-1964.

A native of Mankato, Minnesota, he earned his B.S. (with high distinction), M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. He was promoted to the rank of full Professor in 1966.

Dr. Frederick is active in many educational and agricultural organizations and groups. He is past president of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture; past president of the American Association of Community and Junior College Council of Two-Year Colleges of Four-Year Institutions; a past director of the Minnesota Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture; past chairman of the Minnesota Council for Coordinating Education in Agriculture; a past president of the Minnesota Association of Community and Junior Colleges; a past vice-president of Waseca Area United Way; a past president of the Waseca Area Ambassadors; a past vice-president of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Fund. He was initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 1976. He currently serves as board member of the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council and president of the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center.

Active in both FFA and 4-H activities, he has been awarded the Minnesota 4-H Alumni Award and the National American Farmer Honorary Degree. As an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota, he won a Borden's Award Scholarship and the Caleb Dorr Senior Medal for the highest ranking member of the senior class in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics. He graduated with high distinction. As a graduate student, he received the National Science Foundation Fellowship. In 1982, he received the Distinguished Educator Award for the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. He received the WCCO "Good Neighbor" Award and Sunday, July 29, 1990 was proclaimed Ed Frederick Day in the state of Minnesota by the Governor. He is listed in Who's Who in America.

He is active in many professional and service organizations, including the American Dairy Association, the American Society of Animal Production, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Rotary, Toastmasters and the Knights of Columbus. He is the author of many articles, and for several years wrote the column, "Do's and Don'ts for Dairymen" in Hoard's Dairyman. He is a frequent meeting and banquet speaker.

Ed Frederick and his wife, Shirley, have five children and eight grandchildren and make their home in Waseca, Minnesota.
