Adam Hennings is Rotary District 5960's Global Grant Scholar for 2012. A born and bred Minnesotan, he is no stranger to his sponsor club of White Bear Lake, District 5960, or Rotary International.
Adam began his relationship with Rotary as a Rotary Youth Exchange student sponsored by White Bear Lake Rotary Club. He was hosted by Rotary Club Baden bei Wien in Austria where he lived with two host families and attended secondary school. This first international experience opened Adam's eyes to the world beyond the Twin Cities, and imbued him with a deep curiosity for all things international.
After returning to Minnesota he finished school at White Bear Lake Area High School and enrolled at the University of Minnesota. Adam graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Global Studies. His education married his interest in international affairs and the Rotary spirit of Service Above Self. He become interested in human rights, refugee resettlement, and peace studies. His studies also brought him to Germany and Kenya where he conducted research on torture rehabilitation programs.
Adam's Global Grant allows him to continue his studies in peace and conflict resolution at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Affairs in Geneva, Switzerland. There he will complete a two year Master of International Affairs program. Upon completion of his degree he hopes to enter the U.S. Foreign Service, en route to serving at the United Nations. He is eternally grateful for this opportunity and promises to duly and proudly represent District 5960.
